Calcite on Fluorite, Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-In-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois
Size: 4.4x3.5x2.8cm
Species: Fluorite, Calcite
Locality: Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-In-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois, USA
Description: This specimen has it all (in my humble opinion): good color, a great combination with calcite, and an important historic locality. The fluorite’s lemon-yellow core is outlined by a sharp dark purple band and light blue outer layer. Then the clusters of well-terminated, colorless calcite on top provide a striking contrast. As a bonus, this piece also has some wedge-shaped pseudo-tetrahedral chalcopyrite crystals just below the surface of the main fluorite face.
