Fluorite, Rhodochrosite, Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite, Quartz, Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
Size: 8.0x5.3x4.9 cm
Species: Fluorite, Rhodochrosite, Chalcopyrite, Sphalerite, Quartz
Locality: Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
Description: A nice combination of colorless fluorite octahedrons with white quartz and pink rhodochrosite. There is also a nice sprinkling of sulfides including chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Combination specimens like this are highly sought after from the Sunnyside Mine. The mine is of course infamous for the disaster that occurred in 1978 when the mine working breached a lake above the mine causing a massive flood. The fast inflow of water and debries it carried with it surely would have killed anyone underground. Thankfully the disaster occurred on a Sunday when the miners were not working and no lives were lost. Ex. Mel Bersch
